Special Interest Tours
December in Savannah.
The holiday season is a special time of year for residents and visitors alike. Shimmering white lights and period decorations enchant you with the charm of the authentic South. Savannah’s “Southern Lights” special event period provides a variety of holiday activities.
Faith of our Fathers.
Religion has always had close ties to Georgia’s coast. Savannah houses the second oldest Jewish congregation in the New World; the oldest active African-American church in the nation and served as the founding city of Methodism in America under John Wesley. Outlying areas find the oldest Lutheran facility in America with an active congregation built by the Salzburger Exiles from Augsburg, Germany; a Methodist camp ground with the longest record of continuous service in South Georgia dating back to 1790; America’s smallest church – a traveler’s respite for meditation and rest alongside the busy interstate; a New England-looking structure used as a headquarters for Union soldiers during Sherman’s march to the sea; and much more as we explore these noted historical places of worship.
Fine Arts & Design.
For the cultural enthusiast, the city simmers with a myriad of galleries, studios, and architectural delights. This driving tour reviews past and present sites blended with a narrated history of Savannah; SCAD’s adaptive reuse of historical structures; outlying historic districts beyond downtown Savannah; viewing the works of nationally known artists alongside that of talented SCAD alumni at a popular gallery; visiting working artist’s in their studios above City Market; and experiencing past and present with a tour of the Telfair Academy’s three venues.
